How Long Does Shipping from China to Dubai Really Take in 2026?
In short

Air freight from China to Dubai takes 3–5 days door to door and sea freight takes 25–35 days door to door. Port-to-port sailing itself is only 18–22 days — the rest is booking lead time, consolidation, customs clearance and last-mile delivery.

Everyone quotes you a sailing time. Almost nobody quotes you a door to door time, and that gap is where importers lose weeks.

The honest numbers

Mode Port to port Door to door Best for
Air freight 1–2 days 3–5 days Samples, urgent restock, high-value goods
Sea LCL (groupage) 18–22 days 28–35 days Under 12 CBM, flexible deadlines
Sea FCL (full container) 18–22 days 25–30 days 15 CBM and above

The sailing from Shanghai, Ningbo or Yantian to Jebel Ali is remarkably consistent at 18 to 22 days. So why does door to door take 30?

Where the other twelve days go

Booking lead time (2–5 days). Space has to be booked, and the cut-off for a Friday sailing is usually Tuesday. Miss it and you wait a week for the next vessel.

Supplier readiness (1–7 days). This is the single most underestimated delay. Your supplier says “ready Monday” and means “ready-ish, Wednesday”. Consolidation cannot start until the last carton arrives.

Consolidation (1–3 days). If you are combining several suppliers, the shipment moves at the speed of the slowest one. Worth it for the freight saving, but plan for it.

Customs clearance (1–3 days). With a complete file, 1 to 2 working days. With a query on the commodity description, add three. With an inspection, add more.

Last mile (1–2 days). Jebel Ali to a warehouse in Al Quoz is a short drive. Jebel Ali to Fujairah on a day the receiving bay is full is not.

The delay nobody budgets for

Chinese New Year. Factories close for two to three weeks and the four weeks either side are chaos — rates spike, space vanishes, and quality control gets sloppy as workers rush to finish before the holiday. If your goods need to land in February, they should be booked in December.

Ramadan and the UAE summer affect the receiving end more than the shipping end: reduced working hours mean clearance and delivery windows compress.

How to actually compress the timeline

  1. Send documents before the vessel sails, not after it arrives. A complete pre-arrival file is the difference between a container that moves and a container that accrues demurrage.
  2. Make the commodity description specific. “Electronic parts” invites a classification query. “LED driver modules, 24V DC, for indoor lighting” does not.
  3. Match your invoice and packing list exactly. Different carton counts on two documents is the most common reason for a hold.
  4. Book air for the first order, sea for the repeat. Get the product in market fast, then optimise cost once you know it sells.

A worked example

An importer in Deira orders 400 cartons of small appliances from two suppliers in Foshan and Shenzhen, targeting 18 CBM.

  • Day 0: order placed, deposit paid
  • Day 12: Foshan supplier ready, cartons received at our Guangzhou warehouse
  • Day 16: Shenzhen supplier ready, consolidation complete, packing list issued
  • Day 18: loaded, container sails
  • Day 38: arrives Jebel Ali (pre-arrival file already submitted on day 30)
  • Day 39: cleared
  • Day 40: delivered to Deira

Forty days from order to shelf. Sixteen of those forty were the suppliers, not the shipping.
